Submission Guidelines and Style Guide

Please see the Call for Papers for Issue 11.

Download the Eolas style guide here (pdf).

  • Articles should be based on original research, and be between 7,000 and 10,000 words in length.
  • Please include a brief and essential ABSTRACT (a summary of 50–150 words not taken from the essay itself) for the first page of the essay.
  • Please submit your papers electronically as Word files to the General Editor at: vmcalister@towson.edu
  • Submissions will be peer-reviewed and assessed by the editorial committee and an outside double-blind reviewer, and returned within three months.
  • All accepted articles will be copy-edited by the Editor before publication, but any article requiring substantial revision will be sent back for editing.
  • Please use Chicago style with footnotes.
  • Illustrations must be completed to publication standard and submitted electronically at not less than 600dpi resolution; line drawings must not be less than 1200 dpi.
  • Contributors are responsible for securing all rights and permissions for images upon acceptance.

As you are writing, please consider the following:

  • Please do NOT write in first person; avoid the royal ‘we’.
  • Please do NOT self-reference your paper, e.g. ‘in this paper I will argue’ or ‘This paper will argue’.
  • Please avoid subheads and do NOT break your paper into ‘introduction’ or ‘conclusion’; make any breaks evident in the paper unless it is particularly long.
  • Please make your argument as clear as possible and as early as possible.
  • Please use American spelling and punctuation.
  • Please include original language quotes for all primary sources important to the argument with English translations in brackets [ ] and page or line numbers in ( ). The first textual quote gets a footnote with the full edition details, and the statement that line, etc. numbers will follow in parenthesis. And then every other quote from that text reads something like:

“We gar-dena in geardagum, / þeodcyninga þrym gefrunon, / hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon!” [We have heard of the glory in bygone days / of the folk-kings of the Spear- Danes, / how those noble lords did lofty deeds] (1–3).

  • Please include your last name in the file name.
  • Please include a Bibliography as a separate Word file with your submission.

Eolas follows the guidelines and style-sheet adopted by the Medieval Academy. For any other style questions, please consult the style-sheet for Speculum.

Digital Projects

Requests for digital project reviews should be submitted by the project lead or the potential reviewer in an email to the General Editor. Submissions by the project lead should include a statement on status and development. Project leads will be contacted for such a statement in the case of submission by a potential reviewer. Reviewer guidelines should be consulted before nominating.

Short Reports and Notes

Commencing with Eolas 17, short reports and notes should be 1000-3000 words. These items take a narrower focus than a traditional article and submissions undergo a faster review process by the Eolas editorial team and the relevant member of the editorial board. Submissions are made to the General Editor.
